FSL gains Sixth Consecutive SC21 Bronze Award

We are delighted to have secured our 6th SC21 Bronze Award in 2017.

Despite this being our 6th award, every single one is still very special to us and we are all extremely proud of it. Every year, new Clients work with us, new suppliers are used and new challenges face us however, here at FSL we have continuous improvement running through our blood!

We are setting our bar so high that we now have our own internal targets for OTIF both in and out the door that sit higher than SC21.

OTIF is now targeted at 98.5% and RFT sits in line with SC21 at 99.5% - I’m sure you agree, both extremely tough but certainly achievable. We continue on our journey to silver and have a continuous improvement team dissecting our processes and looking at how we can make small changes.

I am confident that we will be able to reach that silver.

Well done to the team, such a great effort by everyone involved.

FSL Aerospace celebrates 5th year of consecutive growth

FSL Aerospace today (1 September 2017) announced that it has achieved its 5th year of consecutive growth. The specialist supplier of fasteners and fixings has grown sales and expanded its capabilities to meet the needs of the expanding aerospace and defence industries.

This year’s growth has come both from new customers and a deeper relationship with existing customers. It included a landmark eight-year contract to supply components to Meggitt Sensing Systems (MSS) Basingstoke for the next generation of aircraft engines.

This builds on a relationship spanning more than 15 years between FSL and MSS, and will see FSL supplying fasteners and fixings for Meggitt’s sensors for the new LEAP engines – already being used by industry giants Boeing, Airbus and Comac

FSL has invested in new capabilities and successfully secured re-accreditations for ISO9001 and AS9120. The aerospace and defence supplier has an impressive 99.3% right first-time accuracy rate and has secured its 6th consecutive SC21 bronze award.

Richard Woodward, General Manager of FSL Aerospace, says: “FSL is securing managed growth, consistently and strongly. This is due to our highly effective systems and processes, and also our dedicated team. I’d like to thank the whole FSL team, both colleagues and suppliers, which enable us to deliver for our clients time and time again.”

By building a strong reputation in aerospace through their consistently reliable supply chain management, FSL have been able to establish strong connections with aerospace giants.

FSL Aerospace has been supporting the aerospace and defence industries since 1985. It has an unrestricted product range, extensive product knowledge and provision of specialist logistical solutions such as DLF, VMI and Kanban systems.

With their increased drive and clear capabilities, FSL are aiming to develop programmes with existing clients as well as developing new clients in the aerospace industry this year.

MBDA Award

Case Study

FSL Aerospace Helping Meggitt Success
Soar With New Leap Engines

FSL Aerospace has signed an eight-year contract to supply components to Meggitt Sensing Systems (MSS) Basingstoke for the next generation of aircraft engines.

This builds on a relationship spanning more than 15 years between FSL and MSS, and will see FSL supplying fasteners and fixings for Meggitt’s sensors for the new LEAP engines – already being used by industry giants Boeing, Airbus and Comac.

Meggitt has been contracted to supply a range of the engine’s sensors which measure vibration, shaft speeds and a range of critical temperatures.

Supplier Industrialisation Manager for MSS Basingstoke, Steve Hannaway, said they needed a close working relationship with a supplier for such a major global project.

He said: “Because we have worked together for several years we understand what is needed from each other. There is a real family feel to FSL and we’ve often come to rely on them for often complex components. They source exactly what we need and their fasteners and fixtures are used all the way along the production line of our sensors and harnesses. We can trust them to deliver, which is vital when dealing with such an important contract. We also know that FSL’s processes are reliable and everything is traceable, with very tight supply chain management.”

The LEAP is an entirely new baseline turbofan engine developed by CFM International to power single-aisle commercial jets. They are lighter, more fuel efficient and aerodynamic than their predecessor the CFM56 – the most successful commercial aircraft engine of all time. Unlike traditional combustors that mix fuel and air inside the combustion chamber, the LEAP nozzle pre-mixes them to provide “lean burn combustion.

Now in production the order books for the LEAP are growing with carriers all over the world placing orders, impressed by the claims of a 15 per cent improvement in fuel consumption.

Richard Woodward, FSL’s General Manager, said: “We know how important it is to be as flexible and adaptable as possible, especially in the development of a new aircraft engine".

“It takes time to develop a new engine like LEAP because safety is always the highest priority. One of the nuts we supply MSS takes 16 weeks to make because it is modified, plated, tested and re-tested. Our rate of supply is driven by MSS Basingstoke production. It’s our job to make sure stock is available at all times to maintain their ramp-up in production but also we make sure they’re not overstocked. Meggitt staff know they can rely on us".

“We have worked with Meggitt for a long time and we have been able to learn how the company works as it has grown. The contract for Meggitt is for the life of the LEAP project and with the engines already having been selected for the Airbus A320neo, the Boeing 737 Max and the Comac C919 this stands to be around for many years to come.
With FSL’s product knowledge, supply chain know-how and understanding of the aerospace industry we intend to be working with Meggitt long into the future.”

CFM International is jointly owned by industry giants Safran Aircraft Engines of France and American GE Aviation.

The LEAP engines underwent rigorous testing with dozens of prototypes built using Meggitt’s high performing sensing technology and some were ultimately tested to destruction.
The technology will be used in the manufacturing and maintenance throughout the engine’s life - meaning trust, reliability, safety, transparency and traceability from suppliers like FSL is vital.

Meggitt’s global customer services team estimates the LEAP programme will generate gross sales - including original equipment, spares and repairs - of more than £160m.

As an aerospace and defence industry supplier, quality is at the heart of FSL’s business and it has an impressive 99.3% right first time accuracy rate and 98% rate for deliveries on time in full.

FSL’s quality systems comply with both the specialised aerospace industry safety standard AS9120 and the more generic BS EN ISO 9001:2008.

Flood, fire and famine couldn’t throw a spanner into the smooth running of FSL’s supply chain management, thanks to its real-time data back-up at its remote hosting sites in Milton Keynes and Sheffield.

Mr Woodward added: “LEAP is a new type of aircraft engine and everyone at FSL is delighted to have been involved in such an exciting project from the very start.”

Merry Christmas from FSL Aerospace

The festive season is fast approaching so I wanted to take this opportunity to thank our Clients and Suppliers for your continued support through 2015.

It has been a momentous year for FSL seeing Tim Halliday, Managing Director and Dean Woodley, General Manager retire. Myself and Richard Woodward, our new General Manager, have been methodically working our way through the business with our accomplished team understanding processes in more detail and making improvements where required. I want to thank everyone at FSL for making this transition go as smooth as it possibly could do, your support has been overwhelming.

FSL has secured several new contracts this year resulting in us looking at a 20% growth this financial year which is fantastic. This is down to our outstanding team, they work exceptionally hard at making sure our systems are operating as smooth as possible, enabling us to provide excellent service to all Clients and building upon already strong relationships.

2015 has been another successful year for our Charity Policy.
Each year we select 3 charities to support which are based on suggestions made throughout our team. This year we have raised in excess of £2400.
One of the ways we have supported charities is to make a donation at Christmas instead of sending out Christmas cards to our Clients and Suppliers, 2015 is no different.
FSL will be contributing £500 to our chosen charities in replacement of cards.

Our charities for 2015 are:
MIND
Help for Heroes
Great Ormond Street Hospital

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you of our closing times over the festive period. We will be accepting our last delivery at 5pm on 22nd December 2015. Our systems will close down from 12pm on 23rd December 2015 and reopen at 8am on 4th January 2016.

On behalf of everyone at FSL Aerospace, I‘d like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2016.

Carly and Tim are in the process of completing a full restructure as our current General Manager, Dean Woodley, is also retiring. MBDA Silver Award

It gives us great pleasure to announce that FSL has been awarded a Silver award by MBDA as part of their Supplier Recognition Programme for 2014.

The criteria for the award was not only based on Quality and Delivery performance (with the same targets as SC21) but also we were measured on other activities like Technical Input, Innovation, Continuous Improvement and the Working Relationship.

It is important to point out that they have 11 key suppliers of mechanical components who go through this process. Only 2 suppliers won an award this year, both Silver, and we were one of those two. So quite an achievement. Congratulations and thanks goes to everyone.

Every member of the FSL Team has helped to achieve this recognition from one of our top clients and we should all be congratulated.
Well done!
